Community Services receives $250K grant to build commercial kitchen

These funds will allow Community Services to incorporate a commercial kitchen into our Building Together redevelopment project, creating a place where people can come together around food, connect, learn new skills and improve their health.

In March 2020, the Province provided a $3-million emergency grant from the Community Gaming Grants program to Food Banks British Columbia to help British Columbians in need. Each year, $5 million in capital project funding from the Community Gaming Grants program helps not-for-profit organizations build or upgrade community facilities and infrastructure, and update technology and equipment for programs.

Community Services has received the funding as a part of the 2020-21 capital project grant program to help deliver food security programs to more people and expand food distribution. Executive director Catherine Leach describes the grant as a “game-changer” for people struggling with poverty and food insecurity in the community.

Community Services has seen an increased demand for food bank services and prepared meals during the pandemic, and the organization responded with increased food programing.
